With $215 billion in sales, China is ranked highest by the World Spirits Alliance.

According to a recent World Spirits Alliance (WSA) survey, China topped the world market for alcohol sales in 2022. According to the WSA, the spirits sector supported 36 million employment globally and added $730 billion to the global GDP overall.

According to the WSA, the spirits industry is crucial for “driving economic growth, generating significant tax revenues, and creating millions of jobs around the world,” according to its “Spirits: Global Economic Impact Study 2024” research.

The study ranked the nations based on the volume of alcohol sold, and China came in first place with a market valued at $215 billion. With more over $60 billion, the US came in second on the list. According to the Geneva-based WSA, India and Russia tied for third place in terms of the volume of spirits sold, with almost $20 billion apiece.

In 2022, the industry brought in $390 billion in tax income, which is comparable to the GDP of the top 20 countries worldwide. Over half of the $120 billion that manufacturers in the industry spent with their suppliers went directly toward promoting agriculture.

Philippe Schaus, president of the WSA and CEO of Mȏt Hennessy, said, “Notably, more than half of the spirits sold globally are now at the premium level or above, proof that our consumers are embracing the ‘drink less, but better’ philosophy.”
